The CBR Project has been reaching out to disabled children in East Champaran District of Bihar, north India  since 2003.

The main goal of the program is to see that children with disabilities are as independent as possible in mobility, self-care, vocational skills and communication, and are accepted and valued members of their families and their communities.

There are 7 main components of the program:

  1. Village-Based Rehabilitation: working with families to help disabled children become more independent
  2. Medical  / Dental Checks: preventing illness and promoting health
  3. Community Awareness: encouraging the integration of disabled children in all aspects of community life
  4. Family Support and Education: counselling parents, siblings and extended family
  5. Advocacy: assisting disabled children and their families to know and access their rights
  6. Special learning Centers: providing enjoyable and appropriate learning opportunities in a group setting
  7. Outpatient Consultation: working with families who visit the hospital OPD

Transformation Stories

Rani Murmu looked forward to the birth of her fifth child. At 36, and already having four girls, Rani hoped it would be a boy this time. Rani is a Malto tribal. The Malto tribes are a primitive tribal group living in the hills in Jharkhand. The death rate among the Malto tribals are so high, that it exceeds the birth rate. The infant mortality rate of 147 and Maternal Mortality rate of 460 are pointers to this grave situation.
