SHALOM AIDS PROJECT

SHALOM Mizoram is a HIV/AIDS project of EHA, started in December 1997 as a community based HIV/AIDS prevention and care program. Located in Aizawl in Mizoram, SHALOM aims to reduce HIV transmission, provide care to People Living With HIV/AIDS, and minimize the negative socio-economic impact of HIV on individuals, families and communities in Mizoram.

Coverage:

  • TI – 6 localities/communities within Aizawl
  • TCC – Aizawl North Zone
  • PEPP – 5 localities/communities within Aizawl
  • ACC – Church/Pastors/Caregivers/PLWH within Aizawl
  • JHP – Volunteer caregivers/Advocacy within Aizawl (no specific targets)

Key Accomplishments

  • The project proposal for a detailed and comprehensive analysis of PLWH in Aizawl, targeting 60 PLWH, for capacity building and advocacy purposes, has been accepted by TEAR Australia. It will commence from April 2007.
  • Three PLWH families who were under the care and support of SHALOM have been socio-economically rehabilitated.


» Establishing network between Positive Network of Mizoram (PNM) and the Community/Church in Champhai District. The SHALOM Doctor, who is one of the advisors for PNM participated in the joint advocacy meetings between PNM members and community and church groups in Champhai.
» World AIDS Day on December 1, 2006 was observed through a cultural program, jointly organised with Thuampui YMA, one of the target areas. 800 people attended the program.

Main activities

Harm Reduction for Drug Users – promotion of safe drug use, behaviour change counselling, Detoxification Therapy with Opioid Substitution Treatment.

Community Education and Advocacy Programs.

Church mobilization for Care and Support of PLWHA's

Care and Support of PLWH including OI treatment, nutritional and material support, skill training and development, and home based care.
